MOSTI: Northeast Monsoon helps reduce haze

SHAH ALAM, 21 OCT: The transboundary haze pollution that enveloped the country will not continue until March 2016 despite the El Nino phenomenon that is causing dry conditions in the region.

The Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Datuk Seri Panglima Maduis Tangau, said this is because of changing wind patterns when the country experiences the northeast monsoon beginning in November that can also help end the haze.

“The northeast monsoon winds which blows from the east will no longer carry the haze from Indonesia to our country even though forest fires are expected to continues until March 2016,” he said in a statement.

The haze experienced now is due to the presence of Typhoon Koppu and Typhoon Champi in Eastern Philippines.

He said that after the typhoons hit land, wind patterns will change and haze conditions will improve after 26 October.
