SHAH ALAM, 24 SEPT: The Central Government is urged to be more prudent with the use of public money to fund high cost films to prevent a repeat failure of the film Tanda Putera.

Describing the film as a failure in achieving its objectives, including the movie arena, Bukit Jelutong MP Jeff Ooi Chuan Aun said public money should be channelled towards helping with the making of more quality films, especially films that carry positive messages.

“We need films that can appreciate the actual reality of the nation’s situation, and not fiction that fabricates untruths,” he said.

The making of Tanda Putera had cost a whopping RM4.8 million, but box office figures from a few weeks ago showed that it failed to gain enough profit to cover the cost of production.

In his speech at the House of Representatives, Communications and Multimedia Minister, Dato’ Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek, said the government is considering the possibilities of financing more movies like Tanda Putera.

Ooi made his statement after his visit to TV Selangor here.
