RMP Should Emulate Thai Police in Protesting Against the Increase in Cost of Living

SHAH ALAM, 31 Dec: The Royal Malaysian Police (RMP) should be professional in carrying out their responsibilities by providing their full support to the people who are oppressed due to the increase in price of services and daily necessities.

The Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Vice President, Mohamed Azmin Ali, said that cooperation from the police will not only ensure the smooth running of the 2014 New Year’s Eve Protest, without unwanted incidents happening, but it will also benefit the police members and their families who are equally oppressed.

“We are taking the stand that the police, together with the people, should uphold justice and be professional in fighting crime, instead of fighting people who are oppressed by the rising cost of living.

“Although we know that the police are also oppressed when the prices go up, I am not saying that they should demonstrate together, but they should be professional and to not be used either by the government against the people or otherwise.

“It should be the responsibility of the people to safeguard the safety and work together with those who are gathered tonight to launch the protest to prevent any unwanted incidents from happening,” said the Member of Parliament for Gombak when contacted by Selangor Kini today.

Azmin said that past experience has proven that any peaceful protest, like the 2014 New Year’s Protest, will run safely and peacefully if the police works together to ensure the smooth running of the assembly.

Meanwhile, in the development of the anti-government protest in Bangkok, it is estimated that about 500 Thai police personnel, led by Colonel Niwat Puenguthaisri, participated in the assembly to voice dissatisfaction with the government’s procedures in addressing protests.

Colonel Niwat Puenguthaisri described the incident where the police joined in the protest against the government as the first time happening in Thailand’s history.
