LUAS: Water Capacity at 7 Dams in Selangor Good, Satisfying

SHAH ALAM, 17 Feb: The Selangor Water management Authority (LUAS) confirmed that the water capacity at all seven dams in Selangor are in good and satisfactory condition.

In a visit by the Executive Councillor in charge of Youth and Sports, Dr Ahmad Yunus Hairi, to the Sungai Selangor Dam recently, found that all the dams are at levels above the controlled level set.

The visit was to look at the conditions of the dam in channelling water supply to the residents around the Klang Valley in view of the recent dry weather.

Yunus said that three dams are above the 90 percent level.

These dams are; the Tasik Subang Dam at 976 percent, Semenyih at 93.85 and Batu at 92.03 percent.

Meanwhile, the Langat Dam is at 83.63 percent, Sungai Tinggi at 83.56 percent, Klang Gate at 58 percent and Sungai Selangor at 57.63 percent.

“Selangor also has a reservoir for the usage of the area around the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), which is the Sungai Labu Reservoir,” he said, appointed by the State Government to monitor all seven dams.

Also present was the Director of LUAS, Md Khairi Selamat, the Director of the Selangor Water Management Authority, representatives of Syarikat Pengeluar Air Sungai Selangor (SPLASH) and LUAS staff.

Yunus said that the Sungai Selangor dam, together with only the Sungai Tinggi dam, are supplying over 3300 mld of water to five water treatment plants; Rasa, Rantau Panjang, SSP1, 2 and 3, which supplies 60 percent of the water usage of residents around the Klang Valley.

He said that due to the dry season and drought at the moment, the Selangor Government is discussing with the Department of Meteorology Malaysia DMM) to conduct cloud seeding at a relative large scale at the appropriate time in the near future.

“To address the water needs in Dengkil, Sepang and Kuala Langat, the Executive Council has decided to increase water tanks in the area through the State Economic Planning Unit (UPEN) and the Local Authority to help supply water to the affected areas.

“In addition, Syabas has sent water tankers to the area continuously for 24 hours,” he said.

Yunus also advised the people to not waste water although the Selangor government is giving 20 cubic metres per month of free water.

“The people of Selangor need to always be thrifty and prudent in using water so that the water resources in Selangor are not affected in the future,” he said.
