Bersih 2.0 Launches ‘Support Major Zaidi’ Campaign

KUALA LUMPUR: Bersih 2.0 kicked off a major social media campaign for Major Zaidi Ahmad today, hoping to pressure the authorities into dropping all charges against the air force fighter pilot who was court-martialled for reporting flaws in the indelible ink.

“”The Election Commission had admitted in the media about the failure of the indelible ink. Hundreds of voters have lodged reports over the matter.

“So why was action taken against Major Zaidi, who was merely speaking the truth for the sake of public good?” said the Chairman of Bersih 2.0, Maria Chin Abdullah, quoted from Harakah Daily today.

The Bersih 2.0 chief said the group will send an official letter to the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) today, asking that they drop all charges against the major.

She said the “People Support Major Zaidi” campaign is being carried out through social media to allow people to express their unhappiness over the action taken against Zaidi.

“Bersih believes that many Malaysians do not agree with Zaidi being punished and felt that he should be honoured for his honesty and bravery for upholding the truth.

The Bersih delegation which consisted of Maria, the North Peninsular Deputy Chairman, Datu Dr Toh Kin Woon, Secretariat member, Mandeep Singh and Adam Adli, as well as the Ikram Terasurer, Mustafa Basri, visited the Major at his house in Bertam, epala Batas on 24 February.

Major Zaidi was accused of violating the directive from the Malaysian Armed Forces Council by making a police report on the indelible ink in the early voting for the 13th General Election.

Out of the seven charges against Zaidi, three includes issuing media statements and two SMSes which were political in nature.

If Zaidi is found guilty he may lose his pension and other benefits/
