“We do not want the rich and developed Selangor to still have cases of people who are illiterate.

“They are unable to just to write their own name, fill out Welfare Department forms, Micro-Credit Scheme forms or ask for houses under the People’s Housing Project (PPR). Why? Because they do not know how to read or write,” said Dr Halimah.

She said this during her speech for the launching of a computer room at the Jugra Tamil Vernacular National Primary School (SR(j)KT) today.

She added that the state government has taken steps, including providing an annual allocation of RM4 million to Tamil Vernacular schools in Selangor.

The provisions are given consistently, not only during the election period, as practiced by Barisan Nasional (BN).

Dr Halimah, in her speech, also suggested for SR(j)KT Jugra to also take part in the Selangor level reading campaign which will be held in Selangor on 22 April.

She said that the campaign, spearheaded by the State Government, has also attracted the interest of the Federal Government to take part in the campaign this time.

The reading campaign this time also received support from the Selangor State Education Department.

In the campaign starts at exactly 10am. Students and the public are adviced to read any reading material for 10 minutes.
