SHAH ALAM, 18 MAY: Chief Minister, Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim has once again pointed out that intensive preparations are currently taken by the State Government to face the El Nino phenomenon that is expected to hit the country by June.

He said comprehensive steps are being implemented to allow the State Government to collect and store rain water.

The State Government will be able to provide sufficient water supply for the needs of Selangor and the Federal Territories for the next six months, he added.

“The lesson that we have learned is that even though the country receives rain water for up to 200 days a year, it was unfortunate that we did not have a program to save water as river water are usually channelled straight to the sea and not stored. ”

“Therefore, we must take steps to store water in the reservoir and we are confident of overcoming drought and have enough water supply for consumers, ” he said at press conference earlier.

He was in attendance at the Extreme Sports Park to officiate the Flag off Shah Alam 2014 Cycling Program which was participated by almost 800 contestants from around the nation.

Abdul Khalid said that the Langat 2 Project is a long-term program and it will not be able to solve the current water supply issues.

“Langat 2 is temporary as we will need to wait for up to two years till the completion of the treatment plant. This will not be able to solve any problems within the next three or six months, but it might help in the next two years.”

“That is the main reason why we are always looking for water sources to store and keep for these two years, ” he said.

Recently, Deputy Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water (KeTTHA), Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid said his ministry will finalise the paperwork for the Langat 2 Project which will enable Selangor to receive water supply from the Pahang River in order to solve the problems of water supplies.
