SHAH ALAM, 22 JUNE: Consumers from Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya are advised to avoid unnecessary wastage of water throughout this humid weather condition.
The National Water Services Commission (SPAN) in a press release, water supply demands has increased due to the current humid weather throughout the whole of Peninsular Malaysia.
It said if residents took steps to save water and avoid wastage, it will help speed up the process of re-supplying water to areas affected by the water supply disruption.
“The margin of treated water produced in reservoirs in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya are at a very low reading, approximately less than 2 percent.
“Referring to information provided by Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (SYABAS), a few ponds recorded drastic decrease in water stored due to the sudden increase of needs for more water supplies.
Reduction of water levels inthe ponds caused unscheduled and disrupted water supply to Hulu Langat and some parts of Kuala Lumpur on 17th June till 19th June.
For the time being, the affected areas are receiving water supplies from the Semenyih Water Treatment Plant (LRA) and LRA Langat.
The total amount of water provided by the Semenyih LRA is at 688million liters per day(JLH) while Langat LRA provided as much as 482 JLH. It is approximately 25 percent more than the original design capacity of plants which is 545 MLD and 386 MLD.
SYABAS estimates as many as 34,000 and 17,500 user accounts are affected by the unscheduled water supplies in Hulu Langat and Kuala Lumpur.
SPAN then instructed SYABAS to dispatch lorries of water tanks and because it is an emergency for the affected areas.
If there is a need, SYABAS can also provide static water tanks to be placed at the affected areas.
SYABAS will be monitoring the situation on a day to day basis for all of Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya with extra focus on areas that receives water supplies from the two plants mentioned earlier.
