SHAH ALAM, 9 Sept: The public have been asked to not spread false information about a tsunami, which has been spread through social media.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department, in a statement, said that the department is conducting the Indian Ocean Wave 2014 (IOWAVE14) exercise today, September 9.
The exercise will be conducted in collaboration with the National Security Council (MKN), the Royal Malaysian Police (RMP) and Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM).
“Hopefully the public will ignore any false information about a tsunami which was spread on social media,” said the Malaysian Meteorological Department on Facebook.
They said that Malaysia, together with over 20 countries around the Indian Ocean will be taking part in the tsunami drill by using the scenario of an earthquake at the South of Java on 9 September, 2014 and Makran Trench (western Pakistan) on September 10, 2014.
The training is important to test the Indian Ocean Warning System, including this country and identifying weaknesses and operational constraints of each country.
“In the event of a real threat of tsunami, the drill on September 9 and 10, 2014 will be stopped,” they said.
24 countries are involved in the tsunami drill, 10 years after the tsunami hit Acheh that killed over 300,000 lives in 2004.
The countries involved in the exercise are Australia, Bangladesh, Comoros, France (Réunion), India, Indonesia, Iran, Kenya, Madagascar, Malaysia, Maldives, Mauritius, Mozambique, Myanyar, Oman, Pakistan, Seychelles, Singapore, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Thailand, Timor-Leste and Yemen.
