PKR seeks forgiveness from the Sultan of Selangor

SHAH ALAM, 10 Sept: PKR seeks forgiveness from the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, for disappointing him by only nominating Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail as the candidate for Chief Minister.

The PKR de facto leader, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, said that his party and Pakatan Rakyat (PR) respects the principles of the constitution and upholds the constitutional monarchy system and parliamentary democracy.

“We would seek the Sultan’s forgiveness if our decision to adhere to the state laws and convention since 1957 had hurt the feelings of the Sultan,” Anwar said in a press statement.

According to Anwar, Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s statement, on Sunday, saying the PKR failed to understands the Selangor Constitution is extreme.

“Najib has been with the Umno leadership since 1983 and 1993, and supports the amendment in the Constitution to clarify the jurisdiction of His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, in accordance with the principles of the constitutional monarchy.

“As the Prime Minster, Najib should be honest with his party’s stand and Barisan Nasional, and not attack PKR for complying with the same customs,” he said.

According to Anwar, Najib also knows the history of Umno’s rule since the country’s independence in 1957. The party and Barisan Nasional only submitted one Assemblyman or Parliamentarian’s name for the position of Chief Minister, Menteri Besar or Prime Minister.

“PKR reiterates our stand to uphold the sovereignty of the Malay Rulers and the institution of constitutional monarchy.

“This is emphasised in the letters by Dr Wan Azizah, the President of PKR, to His Royal Highness the Sultan of Selangor,” he said.
