Clarification on Master Agreement terms to acquire water industry on Monday

PORT KLANG, 13 Sept: A detailed explanation on the terms of the Master Agreement for the acquisition of the water services between Selangor and the Federal Government will be held on Monday.

The Chief Minister, Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim, said that the takeover measure will be explained to ensure that it is done right for the people to continue to enjoy water supply at an affordable price.

“On Monday, we will hold a detailed explanation on the terms we agreed upon and signed with the Federal Government.

“We will explain the steps of the acquisition to ensure that it is done right and at a reasonable price,” he said.

He said this after attending the Cheque Presentation Ceremony for Tail Schools Phase 2 at SJK (T) Watson last night.

The Selangor Government signed the Master Agreement for the acquisition of the water services with the Federal Government at the Ministry of Energy Green Technology and Water in Putrajaya yesterday.

The event involved Minister Datuk Seri Maximus Ongkili, Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim, Air Selangor Sdn Bhd and Pengurusan Air Berhad (PAAB) to enable the state government to manage the water industry according to the Water Services Industry Act (WSIA) 2006.

On August 1, the Federal Government and the Selangor Government signed the Heads of Agreement on the restructuring of the water industry and a long-term solution to the water issue in Selangor with an acquisition offer worth RM9.65 billion.

In a statement yesterday, Khalid said that the agreement was finalised with the cost to restructure the water industry being lower than the initial offer of RM7.45 billion.
