SHAH ALAM, 29 Sept: The PKR de facto leader, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, claimed that the University of Selangor (Unisel) imposes high fees and strict repayment terms which burden poor students.
He said that the high fees and preventing students from taking exams until their fees are settled are among his criticism against the previous Chief Minister’s administration.
“I cannot accept the previous administration even though he (Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim) is a good friend and a family member of mine,” he said during his speech at the ‘Combating Extremism’ lecture here at Unisel.
Anwar said that Abdul Khalid’s actions cannot be accepted, especially with a lot of extra money (reserves).
“It is the state government policy, what we want is if a student does not have the money, it does not matter (and they may continue their studies).
“But some students who have not paid fees are not allowed to take their exam. This is a rule that the students have to accept because it is a (state government) policy,” he said.
However, he said, the matter has been highlighted to the new Chief Minister, Mohamed Azmin Ali, who will be appointed as the Chairman of Unisel.
“Yesterday, I met Azmin and stressed for students who have been confirmed to be poor to not be prevented from sitting for their examinations.
Prior to this, the PKR Strategic Director, Rafizi Ramli, claimed that Unisel offers the cheapest fees in Malaysia.
Part of the RM30 million fund allocated for education in Selangor will be fully used to help students in terms of finances and so on.
Part of the amount will be divided into a number of methods, including providing a fund to help students continuously which can be channelled to students in the form of finances.
He explained this following official information which was elaborated by the Chief Minister’s Office.
