SHAH ALAM, 6 Nov: Prompts by the central government for all state governments to amend old housing policies that are still used are out-dated compared to Selangor.
The Exco for Housing, Building and Urban Settlement, Iskandar Samad, said that since Selangor was administered by Pakatan Rakyat (PR), the state government has already amended the Selangor State Housing Policy based on current needs of the people of the state.
Iskandar said that the last time the Selangor Housing Policy was improved upon was in 2013.
“The Federal Government wants states to amend out-dated housing policies – Selangor has done it a long time ago,” wrote Iskandar on his Facebook page.
He explained, among the new Selangor housing policies, named the Selangorku Homes in 2013, housing developers are required to build affordable homes for phase one of their respective projects.
Meanwhile, the eligibility limits to buy affordable housing has been increased to a maximum household income of RM8,000 per month.
Iskandar added that the state government, in their housing policy, has actively varying the types of affordable homes, from RM42,000 to RM250,000.
The state government has also set for affordable housing and low-cost projects to be built based on demands of a district to avoid the issue of unstrategic development, thus not receiving response from buyers.
On Tuesday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak urged all state governments to review their out-dated policies regarding low-cost housing.
This is to ensure that low-cost houses are built at areas that need it and not in areas where the demand cannot be determined.
