FAS Exco agrees for Mohamed Azmin to be the new President

SHAH ALAM, 20 Nov: The Football Association of Selangor (FAS) Executive Committee unanimously agreed to appoint the Chief Minister, Mohamed Azmin Ali, as the new FAS President.

Citing the FAS website, Mohamed Azmin’s appointment will only be confirmed during an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) at the Shah Alam Club on December 3.

This is after the 14-day notice asking FAS club representatives to attend it is issued.

The FAS Deputy President, Datuk Abdul Mokhtar Ahmad, who chaired the executive committee meeting, said that the transition process was agreed upon by the current FAS President, Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim.

“The matter was resolved amicably. Tan Sri Khalid, as the current FAS President, agreed and asked to not to fuss about in wanting him to withdraw (resign).

“Automatically, he also advised for the transition to proceed perfectly.

“So all Exco (executive committee members) have unanimously agreed to elect Azmin as the new President and this was also agreed by Khalid,” said Abdul Mokhtar.

Abdul Khalid was elected as the FAS President in 2008 after he was appointed as the Chief Minister of Selangor, replacing Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo.

After going through one term, Abdul Khalid was elected to remain as the FAS President for the 2014-2018 term, but the transition of power in the Selangor Government saw him resigning as the Chief Minister and replaced by Mohamed Azmin.

Azmin, 50, however will have to wait until December 3 before he is confirmed as the new FAS President.

“What was agreed upon in this exco meeting will be brought to the EGM congress on December 3, after FAS issued the 14-day notice to call all clubs for us to confirm Azmin’s appointment,” explained Abdul Mokhtar.

When asked whether Mohamed Azmin agreed to hold the post, Abdul Mokhtar said “It is stated in the FAS Statute that priority is given to the Chief Minister to be appointed as President”.

“It has become the norm and tradition in FAS,” he said.
