SHAH ALAM, 1 Dec: The state government has been asked to give special attention to find a solution to the flood problem that often occurs every two years in Dengkil.
This is because the area is now facing the problem of flooding that involves nearly 300 victims from 60 families.
Shahrum Mohd Sharid (BN-Dengkil) said that a massive flood occurred in 2012, involving nearly 1,000 victims and the same incident has been occurring over the past two weeks.
According to him, it is better for a short-term solution to be made first so as to not take up large funds and he has personally discussed with the Selangor Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) regarding this matter.
“We are wondering if it is possible for the state government to help in a short-term solution and we have discussed with JPS, but they do not have a lot of provisions.
“I ask the state government to help in terms of maintaining the reservoir and the existing drainage system which does not involve a large amount of money, in addition to providing a permanent pump in the village areas,” he said.
He is aware that a long-term solution requires a lot of funds, however the former Chief Minister, Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim, in 2012, announced an allocation for flood mitigation in Tanjung 12 worth RM50 million.
He said that a large-scare solution to the flood problem includes upgrading flood mitigation and old aggers at Sungai Langat comprehensively, as well as deepening the river.
He also thanked the state government for providing an emergency fund through the District Office worth RM500 to victims who moved and RM250 to those who did not move.
Commenting on the issue, the Executive Councillor for Infrastructure and Public Amenities, Zaidy Abdul Talib (PAS-Taman Templer), informed that a special flood committee will be established after the Selangor State Assembly session ends, and it will be personally overseen by the Chief Minister, Mohamed Azmin Ali.
According to him, this committee will list the flood areas throughout Selangor and find solutions to flood disasters.
“To prevent flooding in 2015, an overseeing committee will be established and will list the areas.
“We will look at areas that need to be prioritised to be upgraded,” he said.
