SHAH ALAM, 28 Dec: The Chief Minister, Mohamed Azmin Ali, urged every individual Malaysian, regardless of political ideology or organisation, to increase assistance to flood victims.
He said that the Selangor government will immediately open the State Flood Operations Room to acquire and research the latest information on weather conditions to prepare the machinery in facing the possibility of flooding to spread to other states, including Selangor.
“I urge organisations such as the Selangor Humanitarian Aid Mission Association (PANTAS) to increase the number of volunteers to help with rescue and clean-up work as soon as the floods subside.
“For post-flood programmes, the Selangor Government will bring down the entire Selangor local government machinery, together with lorries and transport machinery, to carry out the cleaning of rubbish and solid waste.
“The service is very important to ensure that there is no outbreak of infectious disease among the people,” said Mohamed Azmin in a media statement.
He said that he has asked government-linked companies (GLCs) to provide assistance such as school supplies and cleaning work for residential areas to ensure that flood victims can immediately return to their daily lives.
“I and the Selangor State Government delegation were in Kelantan for two days to deliver humanitarian aid and benevolent funds from the Selangor Government to the government and people of Kelantan.
“The donation was personally accepted by YB Datuk Nik Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah, the Deputy Chief Minister of Kelantan, at the Telipot Mosque in Kota Bharu,” he said.
Mohamed Azmin said that he visited several evacuation centres and areas that have been hit critically by floods, including Bandar Kota Bharu, Demit, Bunut Payung, Salor and Guchil.
“With great conviction, I and the Selangor Government delegation realise that the assistance extended is less than adequate in view of the number of people who have become victims and the extent of damage, which is very severe.
“In the name of humanity, I wish congratulations and well done to each individual, organisation and NGO that provided assistance such as food and necessities, as well as rescue and evacuation of flood victims.
“In this tough situation, we certainly need humanitarian solidarity from all Malaysians,” he said.
