Selcat: No hire-purchase plans for PPRs in Selangor

SHAH ALAM, 3 Mar: There is no decision or plans to offer hire-purchase agreements to residents for all People’s Housing Programmes (PPRs) in the state.

The Exco for Housing, Building Management and Urban Living, Datuk Iskandar Abdul Samad, said that existing PPRs will remain being rented to residents who qualify because the hire-purchase scheme is not being offered for these types of apartments.

He said that most residents at PPRs are also not able to own their own homes because they have low monthly incomes.

“For hire-purchase schemes, we have created DanaSel that allows them to buy other homes (non-PPR).

“This is because there is a group of people who are not able to obtain a lease to directly buy their homes and make it a transit home before getting better jobs or decide to obtain a loan,” he said.

He said this at a hearing session for the Select Committee on Competency, Accountability and Transparency (Selcat) at the Annex Hall today.

Iskandar said that if the state government should allow hire-purchase to be implemented for PPRs, there will be administration problems at the blocks.

“If we want to make a hire-purchase agreement, it would be better for us to do it for all blocks.

“So far, there is no decision or plans for hire-purchase for all PPRs; it will remain for rent,” he added.

He said that the state government will not adopt the policy that is being used in Singapore that forces their people to buy another home if their monthly income increases.

He said that in fact, the policy of selling houses after two years renting at PPRs will not be done by the state government.

“Many people cannot afford it. So it would be better for us to improve existing PPRs for the comfort of the residents,” he said.
