GST: People have to ‘tighten their belts’

SHAH ALAM, 21 June: The implementation of the goods and services tax (GST) has clearly caused the people to ‘tighten their belts’ in spending.

Mother of three, K Vicky, 41, said that she and her husband are now prioritising their children’s expenditure compared to other needs.

“If asked about the effects of the GST, they are all negative, there is nothing positive for me. Whatever the case, we have the GST despite disliking it.

“After the GST, we realise the difference, we notice that we have to make sacrifices for our children,” she told Selangor Kini.

The GST was first introduced in April and received mixed negative reactions among the people, including celebrities.

In the meantime, Umi Salmah Hamid, 39, from Section 28 admitted that her expenses for the Aidilfitri celebration needs to be rationed due to the GST.

“Despite living with my husband, the GST still affects our expenses, especially since we have a big family.

“Most necessities have gone up in price since the GST; nothing has gone down since,” she said.
