Four local authorities pilot study on solid waste

SHAH ALAM, 10 Sept: Four local authorities have been chosen to implement a pilot project studying the types of solid waste generated the most by households.

The local authorities are the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ), the Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ), the Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj) and the Hulu Selangor District Council (MDHS).

The Exco for Tourism, Environment, Green Technology and Consumer Affairs, Elizabeth Wong, said that the study includes 250 housing units, business and commercial premises.

“We will directly see the types and waste collection in which the solid waste will be collected in a plastic bag.

“In addition to facilitating data collection, we also want to educate consumers about the things that can be recycled. For example, if paper is being thrown the most, then we will focus on reducing the use of the material and provide appropriate facilities,” she said.

She said this at the ‘Beyond 3R : A More Sustainable Solution For Selangor Waste Management’ at the Shah Alam Convention Centre (SACC) today.

The project will begin from September to December this year and will be monitored by the Selangor Solid Waste Action Committee chaired by state Exco, Ean Yong Hian Wah.

She said that if the project is a success, then it will be applied at all local authorities to ensure that solid waste can be managed well.

“Because the existing data is not detailed, we will use this approach to ensure that all problems related to solid waste can be solved.

“If we invest in less appropriate technology without research, it would be useless,” she said.
