1MDB leads to shame and disgrace

SHAH ALAM, 23: Corruption and money laundering investigation involving 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) brings shame and disgrace to the country.

The former Chief Editor of the New Straits Times (NST), Datuk A Kadir Jasin, said that the situation became more serious when the Prime Minister is a suspect abroad.

He said compared to Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad who was hated by leaders of the United States (US) for criticising the country, they have never established a body to investigate him.

“Obama loves Najib (or Najib feels that he is loved) because he is moderate, but the US has established a Grand Judy to investigate corruption allegations against him.

“Like the elders in Kedah say, I want to laugh. Funny but not funny enough to laugh,” he wrote on him blog.

The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported that the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has opened up an investigation on 1MDB on the allegation of money laundering.

WSJ claimed that the FBI began investigations after a former member of the ruling party was arrested before he left for the US to make a police complaint and urge the FBI to investigate 1MDB.

On September 19, the police arrested former Umno leader, Datuk Khairuddin Abu Hassan, to help in investigations for allegedly conducting activities that are detrimental to parliamentary democracy.

Khairuddin, who is also a businessman, and lawyer, Matthias Chang, were supposed to leave for the US today to meet with FBI officials. The meeting was arranged by the US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur.

However, the plan was aborted after the Immigration Department prevented him and Chang from leaving the country before Khairuddin was arrested in the evening.

Khairuddin previously made a report against 1MDB in Switzerland, London, Singapore and Hong Kong.
