CM: Gombak Quarts Ridge targets UNESCO recognition

GOMBAK, 28 Sept: The Selangor government targets forGombak Quarts Ridge at the Klang Gates Dam to be recognised as a world heritage site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).

The Chief Minister, Mohamed Azmin Ali, said that the first step to make the area a national heritage site has begun and approved by the Exco in June 2013.

He said that the Quartz geological asset has a high value and can be rated as a heritage of the region, exceeding the level of national heritage.

“The state government wants Gombak Quarts Ridge to not only be recognised as a national heritage, but a world heritage site in the category of natural heritage.

“This is because this area has an incredible natural rock wall at the edge of Banjaran Titiwangsa which forms the longest ridge in the world at 14 kilometeres( km) with a width of 50 metres.

“This area has 265 species of plants that makes Quarts their habitat,” he said.

He said this at the Selangor Gombak Quarts Ridge Coffee Table Book launch at the Klang Gates Dam Recreational Site today.

The book is aimed at ensuring that the findings of biodiversity and geology at the area is a reference to stakeholders and for future generations.

It will also serve as a supporting document to help the site receive recognition as a national heritage and world heritage site by UNESCO.

At the same time, Mohamed Azmin said that the state government, under the Selangor Heritage programme, aims to make three other areas national heritage sites.

He said that this includes Bandar Kuala Kubu Bharu in Hulu Selangor, Bukit Melawati in Kuala Selangor and the Klang Royal Town.

“The state government will ensure that this valuable heritage site is preserved and conserved to be upheld as a national and world recognition.

“This valuable old heritage site should be preserved and planned holistically without any element of trespassing that could jeopardize and eliminate the heritage that was formed millions of years ago,” he said.
