Instruments for haze observation should be upgraded

SHAH ALAM, 21 OCT: The Federal Government hopes to upgrade haze observation instruments in certain areas.

Kampung Tunku Assemblyman, Lau Weng San, said the move was necessary as a short-term plan to deal with increasingly worrisome haze conditions.

He said upgrading works were carried out in densely populated areas near the borders, such as Kuching, Johor, and Klang Valley.

“I agree with the minister’s statement before this. However, I believe that short-term measures are necessary.

“The costs incurred are substantial but what can be done now are improvements in critical areas,” he told Selangor Kini.

He was commenting on haze observation system in Malaysia which uses Particulate Matter (PM) 10 and the need to switch to more advanced systems such as PM2.5 in Singapore.

Earlier, the Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, said that implementing PM2.5 would require an allocation ten times higher than the island nation, which requires only five machines while Malaysia would need 50 machines.

At the same time, Weng San welcomes Malaysia’s stance with Singapore against Indonesia in the haze issue.

“I have tagged an open letter to President Joko Widodo last September to urge the Indonesian Government to take firm action against those who have acted against the law to cause this global issue,” he said.
