Only in MPSJ, food waste becomes money

PUCHONG, 16 Oct: The public can receive RM1 for each kilogramme (kg) of food waste through the Food Waste Purchasing Campaign organised by the Subang Municipal Council (MPSJ).

However, only food waste that is free from impurities such as plastics, tissue, beef bones, coconut husks or food waste that is not easily destroyed are eligible.

The MPSJ Yang Dipertua, Datuk Nor Hisham Ahmad Dahlan, said that the campaign is part of the effort to establish the MPSJ Green City Action Plan 2030.

“It is two-pronged. In addition to educating the public about the importance of separating food waste, it can also make some money on the side.

“The MPSJ Department of Environmental Management has already distributed 129 food waste separation bins to facilitate the residents.

“The collection of this waste will be done by contractors without charge,” he said during a press conference at Bukit Puchong today.

On October 5, MPSJ launched the Food Waste Purchasing Campaign involving the Bandar Bukit Puchong Housing Park 1, 2 and 3.

As of October 15, 1,094.25 kg of food waste managed to be collected form the purchasing counter.

The pilot project is a result of the Friendship City programme with Hioki city in Japan with an allocation of RM10,000.

Nor Hisham explained that the food waste collected will be processed for the production of gas and subsequently converted to electricity through the Anaerobic Digestion process in a machine designed by SIRIM Berhad.

“Through the National Blue Ocean strategy, SIRIM Berhad provided technological expertise and partnered with MPSJ in implementing this project,” he said.
