SHAH ALAM, 15 June: The state government will continue cloud seeding operations and several other mitigation measures in preparation for the drought starting in June.
The Exco for Infrastructure, Public Amenities, Agricultural Modernisation and Agro-based Industries, Zaidy Abdul Talib, said that it should be done in ensuring the sustainability of the water supply and continuous water resources.
“Cloud seeding began on February 21 in some catchment areas and river basins with the weather to proceed with a cost of RM2 million to date.
“We managed water pumping operations from retention ponds around Bestari Jaya without compromising the quality of water resources where there are 10 reservoirs with a capacity of 84 million cubic meters and a production capacity of up to 800 MLD,” he said in a press statement today.
Among the other measures, he said, includes controlling the release of water from dams to ensure that the release is carried out optimally by taking into account the available water resources.
Efforts to transfer water from the Langat 2 tunnel to Sungai Langat will also be done to empower the resilience of the Sungai Langat Water Treatment Plant, Bukit Tampoi, and Cheras Batu 11.
“Close cooperation between the state government agencies will be carried out to monitor and control to avoid contamination of water sources.
“Strict enforcement is also done through continuous monitoring along the rivers in the supply of raw water at Sungai Selangor, Sungai Langat and Sungai Semenyih, including during holidays and festive seasons,” he said.
Zaidy said that the state government is confident in the ability of the dam reservoir to provide sufficient raw water throughout the drought as the latest dam capacity is now at a higher level compared to the same period last year.
For example, he said, the Sungai Selangor Dam recorded a reading of 79.41 percent.
“The Sungai Selangor Dam and the Sungai Tinggi Dam are the major dams in supplying water in Selangor, which covers 60 percent of the water supply across Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya,” he said.
