RM10,000 start for disabled sports development in Petaling Jaya

PETALING JAYA, 28 May: The Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) is organising the Sports Development Programme for People With Disabilities to improve sports culture among this group.

The Mayor, Mohd Azizi Mohd Zaid, said that the RM10,000 allocation is for each type of sport available and will be increased to RM30,000 next year.

“The programme began with three types of sports; ping pong, boccia and badminton.

“Athletes have the opportunity to participate in the Paralympic Games, the Goalball Championship and other competitions organised by other agencies,” he said at the launch of the Disabled Sports Development Programme today.

Mohd Azizi said that the programme is a platform and access for the disabled to become paralympic athletes of the country.

“MBPJ limits participation to 10 athletes for a start and will be increased according to public response.

“We are aiming for the category ages seven to 25 for men and women,” he said.

The programme will take place at the Badminton Court at the Kelana Jaya Sports Complex on June 7.
