Art lights up dark alleys

SHAH ALAM, 7 May: Side and back alleys are synonymous with being gloomy, scary and dangerous. But with a touch of art, through wall murals, it has changed the negative perception of the area.

Based on the concept of ‘Bestnya Malaysiaku’, the SS2 alleys in Subang Jaya have now become a visitation site of many people, especially art lovers who take pictures to remember visiting the area.

Like in Section 2 and 7 in Shah Alam, the uniqueness of the art activity provides opportunities to artists to showcase their talents and creativity, thus giving light to ‘dark’ alleys.

In fact, the Mayor of Petaling Jaya, Azizi Mohd Zain, welcomed such artistic activities as it brings joy to back alleys with new and attractive images.

With back and side alley beautification activities, it also attracts local and foreign tourists.

The wall paintings at SS2 features nine works. They are ‘Forgiveness’, ‘Singing In The Rain’, ‘Suara Anak Malaysia’, ‘Lat Tali Tamplom’, ‘Stay Under The Roof’, ‘Bestnya Malaysiaku’, ‘Memories of Anak Malaysia’, ‘Kedai Gunting Rambut Lyla’ and ‘Fantasy Malaysia’.

The project organised by the Damansara Utama DUN Service Centre was first implemented in November last year.

All paintings were contested and rated by the jury with the winner receiving a cash prize of RM3,000, RM2,000 for the runner-up and RM1,000 for third place.

The art project was a hit with about 112 entries.

The Selangor government is encouraging cooperation between local authorities and the art community to produce quality wall art to liven the municipalities so that it is cheerful and refreshing to the eye.
