KLANG, 19 Apr: About 200 volunteers from various organisations participated in the activity to cheer up the Nur Kasih Orphanage in Kampung Batu Tiga in conjunction with the Selangor Volunteer Programme.
The Exco for Health, Welfare, Women’s Affairs and Family, Dr Daroyah Alwi, said that the programme aims to foster greater unity and to sow the spirit of volunteerism among the community, especially the youth.
He said that the programme, which received cooperation from the Sinar Ehsan Organisation, targeted orphanages, care centres for the elderly and the disabled to be given assistance.
“This programme is close to the people’s hearts and it was proven when droves of Selangorians helped during the floods in Kelantan.
“On those grounds, we think that this is a good time to work with volunteers who want to be involved in charitable works,” he said during his visit to the Nur Kasih Orphanage today.
Also present was the Kapar Member of Parliament, G Manivannan, and the Ampang Member of Parliament, Zuraida Kamaruddin.
The volunteers consisted of students from the Selangor Islamic University College (Kuis), the University of Selangor (Unisel), the Sinar Ehsan Organisation, the Social Welfare Department and the Selangor Zakat Board (LZS).
In the meantime, Daroyah said that a special body for volunteers involved in the programme will be formed as an effort to recognise their involvement.
She said that the programme is also open to the public to join in contributing and to conduct volunteer work to help those in need.
“Apart from giving donations, we are also holding a programme to cheer up children as well as activities including free medical examinations.
“We are trying to facilitate these homes so that they know that they are not alone.
“When we announce it, the public can also contribute and we will also contribute to their needs by registering them under the Social Welfare Department (JKM),” she added.
Meanwhile, the founder of Nur Kasih, Zubir Omar, said that they welcome the state government’s efforts to cheer up orphans and to offer assistance.
Zubir said that the orphanage which has been operating since 2008 was done out of personal compensations, including obtaining assistance from non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and individuals.
“So far we have 50 children under our shelter and we are very grateful to the Selangor government for everything they have done,” Zubir said.
