Revamp role of JKM to be comparable to LZS in eradicating poverty

SHAH ALAM, 8 Apr: A revamp of the role of the Social Welfare Department (JKM) to be comparable to the Selangor Zakat Board (LZS) is among the five recommendations by the Select Committee (Poverty Eradication) for the state government’s consideration.

The Exco for Poverty and Caring Government, V.Ganabatirao, said that the suggestion is being taken to ensure the welfare of non-Muslims are protected, just the way LZS protects the Muslim community.

“The state government is urged to set up a research or one-stop centre to collect and integrate all data related to poverty.

“The role of local authorities, the State Inland Revenue Board (LHDN) and other relevant agencies is required,” he said during the presentation of the motion during the Selangor State Assembly (DNS) session today.

In addition, Ganabatirao (DAP-Kota Alam Shah) suggested for poverty to be addressed as everyone’s problem, covering the question of human rights.

“Defining poverty based on the poverty line causes a government to fail.

“Instead, the government should define poverty more holistically and comprehensively,” he said.
