MBPJ: Shared responsibility to keep the cleanliness at night markets

PETALING JAYA, 24 Apr: Five night market locations here have been chosen to implement the “Shared Responsibility” pilot project to ensure the cleanliness of the area.

The Petaling Jaya Mayor, Mojd Azizi Mohd Zaid, said that it aims to educate traders without placing full responsibility on the local authority.

He said that this was following the issue of night market management issues that often involve rubbish problems, especially after business activities.

“The waste problem causes environmental pollution, implications on public health, damages public property and drainage.

“It causes huge losses because expenses for garbage collection is costly,” he said during the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) Full Meeting today.

The night markets involved are at the SS2 City Centre, Show Yang SS2, Paramount Garden SS20, SS3 and the SS2 morning market.

Mohd Azizi said that the project began in December last year and involved the Monitoring Committee comprising of three MBPJ officers and three traders’ representatives.

He said that this committee also monitors the activities of traders in maintaining cleanliness in their respective sites.

“For example, the SS2 City Centre night market that operates every Monday has 601 lots that are assessed by a panel of assessors.

“If more than 30 percent of the space is dirty and do not comply with the requirements, the night market will be closed for a day,” he added.
