SUKMA: Sultan wants contingent to avoid controversy

SUBANG JAYA, 10 Apr: The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, hopes that no controversy will hit the Sukma Contingent 2016 to protect the good name of athletes and the state team.

He would be more pleased if the Selangor Contingent found a more enthusiastic slogan that does not contain political elements.

He said that inspiration and sporting spirit cannot be tainted with political or racist elements.

“I urge sports bodies, athletes and sports fans to set aside political ideologies and do not take it into sports administration.

“I do not want the general public to misunderstand that the Selangor contingent is trying to mix sports with politics,” he said.

He said this during the Selangor State Sports Awards Ceremony at the Holiday Villa Hotel near here today.

He also said that the glory of the state’s sports should be returned like in the 60s to 80s which made Selangor well-known and respected.

He said that the significant decline of the Selangor Contingent in the last Sukma Games should be noted, especially since the state government has provided many sports facilities.

“Therefore, athletes and teams representing Selangor should be champions in any sporting events; why is this not happening?

“Therefore, team managers, officials and athletes need to post-mortem it to find the cause of this decline because if it is not handled properly, I fear that the Selangor team may face a period of setback and continue to fall behind,” the Sultan said.
