MACC praises Selangor’s efforts to establish the Integrity Office

SHAH ALAM, 28 Apr: The state government’s reform through the establishment of the Integrity Office is a commendable move even though such administrative practices are of high risk of there are such incidences, said the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Chief Commissioner, Tan Sri Abu Kassim Mohamed.

Abu Kassim said that such occurrences happen across the world and an example is South Korea which once faced the problem of very high corruption.

“As a result of a clear reform, especially in the aspect of transparent management, it led Seoul to improve management integrity and overcome the problem.

“Most importantly, they developed an anti-corruption plan and become one of the first cities to overcome a critical situation after the economic crisis in 1997 and is excelling currently,” he said during the State Government Monthly Assembly recently.

In relation to that, he said that related organisations should have clear policies to help officers, especially in law enforcement, for the success of the plan.

“A detection process, a good complaints system, should be established because it is capable of helping the people channel to trusted entities. This is important because the people’s confidence facilitates all related matters to overcome corruption,” he said.

In addition, he said that the development of government officials’ character is important in producing a state government administration that is transparent and accountable.

“It is an important element in the effort to combat corruption, which is difficult to overcome in a short time. The state government’s effort is highly appreciated because the MACC itself upholds the principle that whoever combats corruption is a friend and those involves in it are our enemies” he said.
