SHAH ALAM, 14 Mar: The organisation of various cycling programmes across the state is capable of producing world-class professional racers, especially Selangor born children.
The Exco for Young Generation Development, Sports, Culture and Entrepreneurship Development, Amirudin Shari, said that at the moment the awareness and interest among the youth for the sport is very encouraging.
“For example, recently I launched the Jamboree where participants had to ride almost 100 kilometres, but there were about 2,400 amateur cyclists.
“This clearly proves that the young people do not reject this sport,” he said when met after the flag-off of the Le Tour De Langkawi 2015 here.
Amirudin said that cycling associations and the State Sports Council (MSN) should be more careful in formulating strategic plans for various development programmes for the sport
He said that this is because the sport is the current trend which should be given more attention.
“We must take the opportunity to hone their existing talents and study how it should be done.
“Although Selangor has produced good athletes such as Shahrul Afendi, we still need successors in this sport,” he said.
Meanwhile, he said that the state government will examine the plan to build a Velodrome.
“Currently, we do not have a place for a Velodrome and maybe we will wait for plans for it in the future.
“I think that despite Terengganu being considered the great power in this sport, but no less is Selangor.
“We are still in the second and third place for the group category and also overall,” he said.
