The state government should periodically check on fishermen, assess the effectiveness of aid

SHAH ALAM, 24 Jan: Fishermen who are really eligible will receive equipment and financial aid from the state government to increase revenue, thus improving their standards of living.

The Exco for Infrastructure and Public Amenities, Agricultural Modernisation and Agro-based Industries, Zaidy Abdul Talib, said that the state government is focusing on providing assistance to low-income fishermen based on cooperation from government agencies and the State Legislative Council’s (DUN) office.

He said that periodic inspections should also be carried out by these parties to assess the effectiveness of providing these provisions to them.

“The objective of this assessment is to see to what extent it has increased the fishermen’s revenue because we do not want to make assumptions that their yield has increased.

“With the report we received from the Department of Fisheries and the Assemblymen’s office, we can intensify this assistance through a specific selection criteria to prove that we are on the right track,” he told Selangor Kini.

Zaidy said that if the assistance given has borne fruit to the fishermen, then it will be extended to other groups who are in need.

He said that the state government will not allow similar incidents from repeating, such as the previous year where assistance was given to those who should have not received them.

“We hope for cooperation from all parties to identify those who truly need assistance and not give it to those who do not qualify,” he said.
