“Among (SIS representatives present) was Zainah Mahfoozah Anwar (former Executive Director of SIS), Datin Marina Mahathir (founder of SIS) and Puan Ratna Osman (SIS Executive Director),” the statement said.

The fatwa gazetted in Selangor on July 17 stated that any individual, organisation or institution that upholds the understanding of liberalism and religious pluralism is deviating from the teachings of Islam and cited the NGO as an example.

SIS has filed for a judicial review against the Selangor fatwa committee, the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (MAIS) and the state government of Selangor on the fatwa that labelled the NGO as “deviating” from Islamic teachings.
