Nature Friendly Walkathon on Oct 18 to instil awareness on river management

SHAH ALAM, 15 Oct: The Kuala Langat District Council (MDKL) invites the public to the Nature Friendly and Sungai Langat Preservation Walkathon in efforts to instil public awareness on the importance of river management.

The programme will be held at the Public Park, Sultan Abdul Samad Department, Banting, with cooperation from the Selangor Town and Country Planning Department on October 18.

The MDKL President, Mohd Azhar Mohamed Ali, said that the organisation of the programme is being implemented and a progressive initiative to beautify the image of the park at the Sungai Langat riverbank.

He said that the programme is to make the area a tourist attraction for visitors from within and outside the country.

“MDKL also hopes that this programme will spark public awareness on the importance of protecting and managing the river for current use and for the future generation,” he said in a statement.

Azhar said that the programme also focuses on the aspect of a smart partnership between stakeholders, in addition to meeting the master plan target for the Local Agenda 21 MDKL.

During the programme, various activities will be carried out, including mural painting on the theme of river preservation, a nature friendly walkathon and a recycling competition.

Apart from that, there is the activity to plant 50 species of trees, releasing 500 bass fry, cleaning up the river and land area, and a colouring contest for children aged five to six.

“We target the youth, especially the local residents, by opening up participation for free.

“250 early participants will receive a t-shirt and have the opportunity to win cash prizes for first place, RM350, second (RM250), third (RM150) and fourth to tenth RM100, as well as lucky draw prizes consisting of an LED TV, bicycle and electrical goods.

“It is hoped that the public can spend some time to participate and enjoy this programme to achieve the aim of creating a healthy community, in addition to stressing of nature preservation” he said.
