MBPJ: 590 raids during operation to wipe out illegal internet cafes

PETALING JAYA, 3 AUGUST: The Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) has managed to conduct 590 raids in its operation to take action on internet cafes that operates illegally and does not obey the law.

MBPJ Mayor, Datin Paduka Alinah Ahmad said it is for us to take action on, these parties that has been taking advantage of the situation from January till July this year.

According to Alinah, out of 590, 20 were issued compound summonses while 512 other premises were seized by MBPJ as its owners has been operating it without a valid license.

“Besides that, we also managed to seize 8019 computer units that were used by these premises,”she told Sinar Harian.

Alinah said, the joint operation conducted together with Royal Malaysian Police Force(PDRM),Anti Drug Agency (AADK) and Selangor Islamic Department(JAIS) before was also a success as there were 149 arrests for various misconducts.

Alinah explained, the operation will continue consistently throughout the year to ensure no parties are irresponsible and attempt to generate income the easy way.

“We will continue to conduct these operations and take necessary action under the Local Law for Cyber Cafes (MBPJ) 2007, where they could be charged a minimum compound at RM1,000 or maximum RM2,000 or face jail time for not more than 6 months or both,” she said.

Alinah said her department wishes that all parties will be able to abide by the laws provided by MBPJ to prevent legal action taken on them.
