SHAH ALAM, 8 July: The Selangor Water Supply Company Sdn Bhd (Syabas) should have informed the State Government in advance regarding the abnormal demand for water, so much so that there have been disruptions at some areas recently.
The Selangor State Water Task Force Committee, in a statement, is of the opinion that the concession company should also propose proactive measures regarding the case, in addition to be committed in resolving the water issue in a coordinated manner.
The statement said that there have been water disruptions around Kuala Lumpur, Gombak and Hulu Langat due to a sudden increase in water demand by 197 million litres per day (MLD) or an equivalent increase of 4.3 percent above the prevailing average of 3.5 percent per year.
In fact, they said, the situation worsened when the electricity supply at the Sungai Selangor Plant 1 (SSP1) was out for three hours on June 24, in addition to three water treatment plants in Sungai Selangor experiencing a decline in water production due to the differences in time of water release to ponds.
“Close coordination between all parties is very important to ensure that the release of water is adjusted to prevent recurrence of such incidents.
“Even though the different water source connections facilitate the distribution of water supply between areas, if they encounter problems, Syabas is encouraged to adopt best practices to identify the cause of the sudden increase in demand before channelling water from one source to another,” they said.
According to the statement, the State Government has ordered Syabas to identify areas with high demand through Water Balance Metres (WBM) and District Metering Zones (DMZ) to overcome possible disruptions due to high demand.
