KUALA KUBU BHARU, 24 Apr: Consumers need to be smarter and prudent in using water by obtaining supply from other sources to not depend on tap water alone.
The Assemblywoman for Kuala Kubu Bharu, Lee Kee Hiong, said that consumers must make use of rainwater by storing it so that the resource is not waster and can be used as best possible.
“When it rains, we do not store it. Perhaps now we need to use a new method to store water,” said Kee Hiong.
“We need to practice this method to accommodate the shortage while waiting for the Hybrid Off-River Augmentation System (HORAS) project to be fully completed,” she said.
The State Government will implement HORAS to overcome the shortage of water in Selangor and is expected to be fully completed in July next year.
The reservoir in Bestari Jaya is able to accommodate a capacity of 600 million litres per day (MLD) of water, which will then be pumped to the nearby water treatment plant.
The Assemblywoman for Damansara Utama, Yeo Bee Yin, said that an awareness campaign needs to be mobilised so that the public, as consumers, know and are smart in saving water.
She said that this is because water usage activities have not changed much even after the water rationing is over.
Prior to this, a delegation of Assemblyman consisting of Bee Yin; the Assemblyman for Kampung Tunku, Lau Weng San; the Assemblyman for Bukit Gasing, R Rajiv; led by the Assemblywoman for Kuala Kubu Bharu, Lee Kee Hiong, visited the Sungai Selangor Dam to review the developments there.
It was reported that the water reading recorded at the dam is at 38 percent and it is lower than the target set by the State Government; above 39 to 43 percent.
Been Yin said that the Sungai Selangor Dam is important, in addition to the Sungai Tinggi Dam, because it contributes to 60 percent of the water needs in Selangor.
“We hope that the Government will work harder to protect the quality of water in rivers for long-term planning,” she said.
