Urban Poverty Eradication Programme: MBPJ Tracks the Poor

PETALING JAYA, 30 Jan: The Petaling Jaya City Centre (MBPJ) will continue efforts to track the urban poor in the territory to be listed in the Urban Poverty Eradication Programme (PPKB).

This is because since the PPKB was implemented in June 2011, about 866 urban poor managed to escape the poverty income level (PLI).

The MBPJ Mayor, Datin Paduka Alinah Ahmad, said that the urban poor have the opportunity to gain knowledge and learn various skills according to their interests and inclinations to generate their own income through the PPKB.

“So far, PPKB has provided workshops on sewing and beading, cake and decoration, therapy and massage, as well as computer skills (website and blogs).

“MBPK is committee in intensifying these efforts, which is being joined by the Department of Social Welfare, Majlis Amanah Rakyat, the Selangor Zakat Board and several non-governmental organisations (NGOs) collectively in arranging programmes comprehensively and continuously.

“A large portion of participants in this programme have benefited from skills workshops provided and now are able to earn revenue by operating their own businesses,” she said when met by Selangor Kini today.

For the record, since its inception in June 2011, PPKB managed to identify about 1360 urban poor in the territory and this number has been successfully reduced to 866 urban poor in September last year.
