Unreasonable to Consider Civil Servants Who Participated in the Assembly Against the GST as Traitors

SHAH ALAM, 2 May: The Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Consumerism Bureau said that allegations by the Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Services (Cuepacs), that civil servants who participated in the May 1 Assembly are traitors, is an extreme and unreasonable move.

Its Chairman, Yahya Shari, said that civil servants should not be prevented from participating in protests against the goods and services tax (GST) because they too have the right to speak.

He said that freedom to state their stand on a matter or issue is also clearly enshrined in the Federal Constitution.

“The question of staff employed by the government is their own business as long as they work and carry out their duties well and with trust, it is not a problem.

“Cuepacs should state that civil servants or top officials involved in corruption are traitors, but they have never done this. We are very disappointed with the statement by Cuepacs,” he said when contacted by Selangor Kini today.

Yesterday, the Cuepacs Chairman, Azih Muda, said that civil servants involved in the rally against the government had violated the “Akujanji” and Service Pledge that they had made.

He also regards those (civil servants) who participated in the assembly as traitors and should leave from being a civil servant.

At the same time, Yahya said that they also highly appreciate the courage of civil servants who took to the streets to express their wishes and stand on the GST; which clearly is oppressive and burdens the people in terms of cost of living.

He said that the government should have other alternatives to help the people generate additional income if they are indeed sincere about fighting for the people’s interests.

“If you they would just listen. But the government would not agree with the opinion of the people, so there is no use. It is not enough to just listen. The people want action by the government, not to just listen,” he said.
