Strategy Updated to Face El Niño, Store Enough Water

SHAH ALAM, 12 May: The Selangor Government is updating its strategies to ensure adequate water supply in facing any possibility of a dry spell caused by El Niño.

The Executive Councillor for Youth and Sports, Infrastructure and Public Amenities, Dr Yunus Hairi, said that water is important as previously Selangor faced water rationing for almost two months because of the low rate of rainfall and the drought.

“Our efforts to channel (mine water) to Sungai Selangor (plant) is one of the plans to address this situation.

“We also hope for the rate (of rain) at dams to increase,” he told Selangor Kini.

Touching on the issue of food, he explained that the supply for Selangor is enough to accommodate the needs of the people.

Prior to this, scientists predicted that the El Niño, which is expected to occur this year, will be one of the worst in two decades.

In line with the move, the Selangor Government has taken steps to use water from former mines in the state, which will go through the treatment system before being distributed to consumers, to increase water supply at dams.
