SHAH ALAM, 29 May: The Shah Alam City Council (MBSDA) will set up a new department to facilitate the management of solid waste in areas under its jurisdiction in accordance with the recommendations of the State Government.
The Mayor, Datuk Mohd Jaafar Mohd Atan, said that the new department, called the Department of Solid Waste Management and Public Cleaning, will be formally established in July.
He said that the proposal papers for the establishment of the new department have already been presented yesterday during the MBSA Full Meeting with council members.
“Currently, the State Government has also decided that by year 2016, 30 percent of domestic waste collection and public cleaning must be done ‘in house’ by the local authorities that are capable, like MBSA.
“So, if there are 100 contractors sweeping rubbish, cleaning drains and cutting grass, then 30 percent of them must be under the administration of MBSA by 2016,” he said.
Earlier, he chaired the MBSA Full Meeting before joining a press conference on the Foo Kok Keong Cup Badminton Championship.
Elaborating, Jafaar said that MBSA will provide for costs not exceeding RM1.5 million for the establishment of the new department and to improve the functions of existing departments.
“Actually, this new department does not require a lot of new officers because the function of this programme is under the department of city services and the department of parks.
“So some staff from these departments will be transferred to new departments while existing departments will continue to be strengthened,” he said.
Jaafar said that MBSA has six compactors and expects to add another two by the end of this year to facilitate solid waste management and public cleaning.
