LUAS: Intensify efforts to avoid repeat of water rationing

SHAH ALAM, 10 June: The Selangor Water Management Authority (LUAS) will ensure that water rationing in the state, including the Klang Valley and Putrajaya, does not recur despite the El Nino phenomenon (dry season) which is expected to hit the country in June.

The Director of LUAS, Md Khairi Selamat, said that they already have alternative plans to ensure that the water supply is adequate for the people of Selangor.

He said that apart from dams, Selangor is also dependent on water reservoirs that can supply a higher capacity of water supply.

“According to discussions at the state level, we will avoid it (rationing) from happening again by using water from reservoirs.

“In fact, laboratory tests by the Department of Chemistry prove that the contents of the reservoirs do meet standards,” he said after presenting the work papers during the Budget 2015 Dialogue session at the Shah Alam Convention Centre (SACC).

In the meantime, Md Khairi also informed that the water level at the Selangor Dam has recorded an increase of up to 43.52%, despite no rain in the past few days.

He also said that cloud seeding efforts will continue, even during the dry weather, by using the best methods.

“Although it has not rained for the past two to three days, the water levels at dams have increased because it came from catchment areas and entered the dams.

“On cloud seeding, we will continue it by using the best methods. In fact, preliminary discussions are taking place because it involves a number of agencies and requires the assistance of those with the equipment,” he added.
