Taman Sentosa retention pond to be completed in September, to overcome flood over the past 20 years

KLANG, 19 June: The construction work of the Taman Sentosa retention pond, which will be able to overcome flooding problems in the surrounding area, is expected to be completed this September.

The Assemblyman for Seri Andalas, Dr Xavier Jayakumar, said that the retention pond would be capable of carrying out 80,000 cubic metres of water to the nearby Sungai Aur.

He said that a large pipe will be connected from Sentosa to Bandar Puteri and Putera to be taken by the flow of water to the pond to ease the flooding problem faced by residents in the surrounding areas for 20 years.

“I want this project to be completed before the rainy season hits after the El Nino so that the people will not experience flooding. I understand the difficulty that the residents have to face each time flooding happens.

“In my experience, every year this area will be flooded over half a metre to two metres,” he said when met after visiting the retention pond project site today.

The project, which began in 2013, is being carried out by a subsidiary company of Gamuda, with the full cost being shouldered by the developer.

At first, low-cost houses were to be built on the 15 acres of land, however it was changed into a flood mitigation project due to the absence of demand in low-cost houses in the area of North and South Klang.

In fact, the available low-cost housing has not been fully sold according to an overall study from the Selangor State Housing Board.

“Therefore, I proposed to the State Government to develop this mitigation project after viewing the development plans,” he said.

Xavier said that a recreation park with various facilities will be developed adjacent to the retention pond and 306 units of affordable homes from the Selangorku Homes programme will be built adjacent to the project.

“This is because there is a higher demand for affordable homes compared to low-cost houses. Meanwhile, the recreational park will the second largest in this district, after Taman Rakyat,” he said.

The retention pond and the park will be submitted to be under the care of the Klang Municipal Council (MPK) after completion.

“I would also suggest for a special provision to be granted to the parties concerned to maintain this retention pond and other retention ponds to keep them in good condition,” he said.
