Selangor decides for over 40% of affordable housing to be built

SHAH ALAM, 19 June: The Selangor Government has set for a minimum of 30 to 40 percent of houses built in the state to be affordable housing, especially for those earning low to medium incomes.

The Executive Councillor in charge of Housing, Building Management and Urban Settlers, Iskandar Abdul Samad, said that developers that have received approval to plan have to build affordable housing first before proceeding with other housing projects.

He said that the State Government has conducted a study on affordable housing and the results have been proven through the policy of the Selangorku Homes, which will be built in counties or districts with high demand.

“That is why we are taking so long to draft the affordable housing policy because we are setting it according to counties or districts, and the land must exceed five or ten acres.

“We have set for 30 to 40 percent of construction to be Selangorku Homes, with prices ranging from RM42,000 to RM250,000,” he said during the winding up speech at the Selangor State Assembly session yesterday.

In the meantime, Iskandar, who is also the Assemblyman for Cempaka, said that the current State Government’s desire is to create a special body dedicated to building affordable homes.

He said that the State Government has also set for all affordable housing projects to be built in every district in Selangor before 2018.

“This will be done through the Selangor Housing and Property Board (LPHS), with the first project being the one in Sungai Sering, which will be completed in December 2016.

“Our aim is for LPHS to take a step forward and to build affordable homes in every district in Selangor,” he said.

Iskandar also said that the State Government’s aim to give loans to buyers who cannot afford it will become a reality after receiving approval from a bank.
