SHAH ALAM, 13 Nov: The Selangor Public Library Corporation (PPAS) is committed to re-activate mobile libraries due to demand for the service.
The Director, Mastura Muhamad, said that this is a dream of PPS to provide this facility in accordance with the state government’s efforts to prioritise education for the people.
“The demand for mobile libraries is very high. Although we have many rural libraries, but when various parties such as Assemblymen, non-governmental organisations (NGO), schools and so on make a crowd, they need the service.
“However we do not have specific provisions,” she told Selangor Kini.
Mastura said that PPAS plans to hold discussions with the Exco for Education, Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, regarding this matter.
She said that the mobile library service has reached between 15 to 10 years in Selangor and the current situation is not satisfactory while the process to improve it involves a rather high cost.
“What we have is pretty dilapidated. When we wanted to repaint, the quote received was over RM20,000.
“I see libraries as schools after school hours. Which means that the role of librarians would be educators like teachers in schools. Our children will not go to unlicensed cyber centres but come to the library,” she said.
She said that mobile libraries will provide more choices to the people in Selangor.
She said that currently, the mobile library service is available in Banting, Sabak Bernam and Kuala Kubu Bharu.
