SHAH ALAM, 18 Mar: The attitude of South Korean children of being concerned about hygiene should be emulated.
As soon as they get off school buses, they would run around the field looking for rubbish bins to throw their candy wrappers.
The Chairman of the Select Committee on Local Authorities (JB-PBT), Dr Idris Ahmad, said that instead Malaysian children have the opposite habit.
“In Malaysia, school children would arbitrarily throw rubbish the second they get off the bus.
“The problem is public awareness which is one of the causes of the trash problems we face, in addition to several other factors,” he said during a press conference at the Annex Building at SUK this morning.
Also present at the press conference were members of the JP-PBT, Dr Halimah Ali and R.Rajiv.
On February 27, a closed hearing was held to determine waste management problems, involving 12 local authorities.
At the same time, Idris said that the JP-PBT will also focus on road maintenance.
“We are waiting for a written response from 12 local authorities and the Public Works Department (JKR) on the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) on road maintenance,” he said.
Both reports are expected to be debated at the Selangor State Assembly in the second session this year.
