KUALA LUMPUR, 2 Apr: The central government should issue reports on the effects of the implementation of the goods and services tax (GST) over a period of a month.
The Kelana Jaya Member of Parliament, Wong Chen, said that the government should conduct a detailed study through an independent body and not refer merely to the survey on the first day.
“No matter what the minister said, please do not us the effect of two days (of the implementation), at least issue the effects of a month after implemented on whether prices have increased or not.
“It is illogical that with an increase of the six percent tax the prices do not go up,” he said when asked to comment on the implementation of the GST of six percent, which began yesterday.
The Member of Parliament for Kota Raja, Dr Siti Mariah Mahmud, said that she is worried that traders will take advantage of consumers that allows them to be charged twice due to confusion about the goods that are taxable or not.
The same opinion was also expressed by the Kuala Langat Member of Parliament, Abdullah Sani, who is worried about the impact on low-income earners.
“No one can deny an increase (of prices) of essential goods and preparations that the government has done is not concrete,” said the Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) Deputy President.
