SHAH ALAM, Jun 22: The Most Honourable Dr Mohd Naim Mokhtar considers his appointment as the new Chief Judge of Selangor as a challenge to ensure that the mission and vision of the Department of Syariah Judiciary are achieved.
Being among the youngest Chief Judges in history reinforces his passion for upholding the Selangor Syariah Court in the highest position.
“Among the potential challenges is overcoming the negative perception of the Syariah Court that exists among Muslims and non-Muslims.
“For this purpose, the entire department staff and I will provide a description and explanation of the Selangor Syariah Judiciary Department.
“I believe much of this negative perception is built upon a misunderstanding,” he told SelangorKini.
Prior to being appointed as the Syariah Chief Judge, Mohd Na’im was the youngest Shariah Chief Judge and was the Director of the Family Support Division, Malaysian Syariah Judiciary Department.
Aged 47, he holds a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) and was once appointed the Malaysian Cheavening Visiting Fellow of Oxford University, United Kingdom for year 2008 / 2009 and a Visiting Fellow at Harvard Law School, Harvard University United States.
He received his LLM from the University of London, the United Kingdom, Diploma in Syariah Law and Practice, and his Diploma in Islamic Administration and Judiciary from IIUM and his PhD in Syariah Law from the Malaysian National University (UKM).
Having started his career as a law lecturer in IIU in 1990 until 1997, Mohd Na’im was later commissioned as a Syariah lawyer in Negeri Sembilan, Malacca and Singapore and as an advocate and solicitor of Malaysia in 1997 and 1998
In 1998, he was appointed as Judge of the Petaling Syariah Subordinate Court until 2001 before being appointed as Judge of the Syariah Subordinate Court of the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur from 2001 to 2003.
He was also appointed to the Department of Syariah Judiciary Malaysia as a research officer from 2003 to 2005.
Mohd Na’im once served as Senior Prosecutor at the Federal Territory Religious Department between 2007 and 2008 as well as a guest lecturer at UKM and UIAM from 1998 until present.
