Toll rates increase dramatically, what is the Federal Government doing?

SHAH ALAM, 14 Oct: The Federal Government is seen as being continuously week and failing to address the issue of toll increases in the Klang Valley.

The Kampung Tunku Assemblyman, Lau Weng San, said that in any case, the Federal Government can use certain methods to take back existing highways.

He said that these moves can ensure that the toll increases are controlled, reduced or eliminated.

“Like the Damansara-Puchong Expressway (LDP), concessionaires have obtained their profits since they started operating because their concession period is long.

“So, the expropriation clause can be used,” he said.

Starting 15 October (tomorrow), 11 highways will operate with the new toll rates..

Elaborating, Weng San said that the government can also use its position to at least negotiate with concessionaires.

“After a certain period of time, they have already generated sufficient profits, concessionaires should be reopened to be tendered in the open market so that those making the tenders who offer the lowest toll rates can be granted the concession rights for a certain period.

“It is important to break the existing monopoly,” he said.
